住所不定だった孤高のシンガー・ソングライターが、「たった1枚のアルバムで世界へ羽ばたいた」と評される天才。
2013年、映画『ホビット 竜に奪われた王国』のエンド・クレジットに書き下ろし曲『I See Fire（英語版）』が使用された。
2014年リリースのアルバム「x（マルティプライ）」は、イギリス・アメリカともにアルバム・チャートで初登場1位を獲得。イギリスではプラチナ・ディスクに認定された。
歌詞に出てくる小さな塊（＝子ども）は彼の子どもではありません。
インタビューで彼が語ったところによると、これは子どもを失った友人のために書いた曲とか。
