1972年公開のブラックスプロイテーション映画『スーパーフライ』のサウンドトラックアルバム『スーパーフライ』を発表、全米1位を獲得した。
1990年にコンサート会場で照明機器の落下事故に巻き込まれた後遺症で半身不随となるものの、1996年にアルバム『ニュー・ワールド・オーダー』を発表した。

1999年に57歳で死去。
